Slice of Life, with your host: John "JP" Wilton
I will be blogging about my life, and the life of others. Not to mention some Android stuff that you probably already know about, and some you might not. Pay close attention. I move quickly.

Call me what you like but...
Call me what you like but every day my wife makes a lunch (4 out of 5 per week) she gives me a nice note. It started when we were having a rough time at work. Puts a smile on my face when it's needed. Anyway... Ella gave me my note today. Talk about a smile! Google + post.

You can't miss that little green #Android robot...
So last night I get home from a l-o-n-g day at work. I have a nice meal that my wife made me, then I sit down in front of the TV to watch some Detroit Tiger's baseball. They were in Toronto, for those who don't follow the Tigers.
I look away from the TV to see what the kid is breaking and when I look back I see an advertisement for a Canadian company. The ONLY thing that caught my eye... the little green Android robot COVERING the display board behind home plate.
Now, normally I don't pay two seconds of attention to those ads, but this one grabbed my attention for sure. Here's what I saw behind Brennan Boesch (Tiger's OF)... Very cool advertising!

#Honeycomb?! On a Sylvania Mini Tablet Express?!??!
Well... not exactly. :)
Actually, it's just my rooted SYTABEX7 with Launcherpro 0.8.5 and a Honeycomb theme from the Android Market (had to side load both). I'm also using FancyWidgetPro with a Honeycomb theme and BeautifulWidgets with a Honeycomb theme for the toggles, although I think I need to find something else. I don't think the toggles look as I'd like them to.
I've also gotta say that the new Plume app for Twitter has a certain Honeycomb feel to it. I think it looks great on the Mini Tab. I have yet to try it on the gtablet, but I'm guessing it'll look even cooler!

Sylvania Mini Tablet - Express... my experiences so far...
Ella on the gtablet |
I take my Viewsonic gtablet to work with me every day, and every single time I get home Ella is at the door asking me "Daddy? Can I play da Angry Birds or your toy now?" (By "toy" she's referring to my gtablet. That stems from the first day I have it. I brought it home and told her "That's Daddy's new toy. You don't touch it." ... Obviously over time I've let her begin to play games and read books on it.) Video link of Ella playing on the gtablet.

The coolest thing, in my opinion, that I've seen that comes stock is the ability to snap screen captures. It appears to be a native application as it was available in the OS that it came loaded with (DG2.01, or Android 2.1) and was still there after I manually updated to DG2.20 (or Android 2.2 Froyo).
LauncherPro Plus 0.8.5 |
I was able to install most of my usual apps, including LauncherPro Plus, some Angry Birds and Opera Mobile (which needs tweaks yet).
I believe I was able to get Flash working too. All I did (after root and update) was rip the apk from my gtablet, remove the stock flash apk, and replaced it. In Opera Mobile I'm able to play some internet videos, however using KidsMode (which requires Flash) I have yet to succeed.
In closing, for $105 (with sales tax) and with manually updating the OS to DG2.20, it's actually a fairly solid piece to add to your Android device collection. I thought it was worth the gamble, and I'm glad I took that bet.
Now if we could just get some ROM love from the devs (and some releases from the manufacturer) I'd say this could be a great little everyday device. Some GApps would be awesome too. Still no access to the Android Market and I have yet to find a solid alternative.

HBO GO® for Android... my experience playing with it on my HTC Hero (CDMA)
As you have probably heard, HBO has released a new application to the Android Market called "HBO GO®".
Web Market Link
I was unseccessful when attempting to login on the gtablet. I get a constant FC, but only when I attempt to login. That being said, it works pretty good on the Hero running CM7.0.2
As far as I can tell, it works well when connected to a wifi point. I was getting an error when trying to watch over 3G. Something about not being able to stream the audio and that I should connect to wifi. I did just that and was able to watch a couple of minutes of Band of Brother as well as Boardwalk Empire (two of my favorite HBO programs).
NOTE: You must be an HBO subscriber to utilize the app as it was intended. I was able to login using my Comcast (Xfinity) account without issue.

Once I heard this, I immediately had it downloaded and installed on my HTC Hero and my Viewsonic gtablet.
